Den hade biopremiär i USA den 21 november 1931. Frankenstein ble utgitt anonymt i 1818 og gjenopptrykt i 1823. En sterkt omarbeidet tredje utgave ble trykt i 1831 , da under fullt navn og med et forord skrevet av Mary Shelley selv. 1831-versjonen er vanligvis den som utgis i dag, men det finnes gjenopptrykk av 1818-utgaven der Elizabeth Lavenza er en slektning av Victor.
